Background: Technology

Our abilities to conceive, create and use technology has given us virtually supernatural capabilities and an unparalleled position in the ecology of the planet. These include control over fire, pottery, wooden tools, metal tools, weaving, water management and agriculture and animal domestication. One of the most important technologies is the ability to communicate the ideas and discoveries to others in great detail - language and writing. In the last two hundred years, all our technical abilities have expanded dramatically and are accelerating to many kinds of engineering, electronics, computing, genetics and space physics. Some technologies have proved to be much more beneficial and sustainable than others.
